My experience of writing my first English essay in first grade
My memory of writing my very first English essay in the first grade is ingrained in my mind. As a non-native speaker, I was apprehensive when it came to expressing myself in a language that was not my mother tongue. However, I was determined to do my best when my teacher assigned the task of writing an essay on my favourite hobby.
I started by jotting down ideas and words that came to my mind about my hobby, which was cycling. I then consulted my English textbook for relevant vocabulary and sentence structures. Initially, it was challenging to put my thoughts into words, but I persevered by trying to use simple sentences to articulate my ideas.
I started with an introduction that briefly explained what cycling is and why it is my favourite pastime. I then moved on to elaborating on some of the benefits of cycling, such as keeping me fit and healthy. I also shared my experiences of cycling with my friends and family.
As I wrote the essay, I realised that I had to do more than just translate my ideas from my native language. I had to understand the nuances of the English language to ensure that my message was conveyed accurately. For instance, I had to be mindful of using prepositions and articles correctly.
Despite my best efforts, I had several grammatical errors that needed to be corrected. My teacher highlighted my mistakes and gently guided me on how to use the correct grammar. I worked on my mistakes and submitted my essay a few days later.
I remember feeling both relieved and proud when my teacher complimented me on my essay. She commended me for communicating my thoughts effectively and encouraged me to keep practising.
Looking back, that first essay was an important milestone for me in my journey of learning the English language. It showed me that communication in English was not beyond my reach, and with practice and guidance, I could improve my writing skills.
