My First Year of Learning English: Reflecting on my Experience with Writing a Small Essay in Grade 7

English is widely considered to be the global language of the 21st century, providing individuals with an opportunity to communicate with people from all across the world. Being a non-native speaker of the language, the challenge of understanding and communicating effectively in English was an obstacle that I knew I had to overcome. Learning English was particularly daunting for me as it involved mastering the four key areas of the language; listening, reading, writing, and speaking. In this essay, I will reflect on my experience with writing a small essay in grade 7 during my first year of learning English.

In grade 7, as a part of our English language curriculum, our teacher assigned us the task of writing a small essay on a topic of our choice. At that point in time, I was still grappling with the nuances of grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary, making the task seem all the more difficult. Despite this, I was determined to put in my best effort and write a compelling essay.

The first step in writing the essay was deciding on the topic. After brainstorming ideas, I finally decided to write about my experience during my first trip abroad. I wanted to convey my excitement about visiting a new country and discovering new cultures. Once I had my topic, the next step was to put my thoughts down on paper. I started to carefully plan individual paragraphs, making sure that the content was cohesive, and the ideas flowed logically.

The main challenges I faced while writing the essay were the limitations of my vocabulary and sentence structure. I had a basic understanding of the language at the time, and therefore, struggled to express myself succinctly. Additionally, maintaining coherence and clarity in my writing was a constant struggle. I remember spending hours poring over each word and sentence, trying to ensure that it made sense.

After completing the first draft of the essay, I turned it over to my teacher for review. Her feedback was invaluable, pointing out areas where my sentences were awkward or unclear, vocabulary that could be improved, and the overall organization of the essay. I made the suggested changes, ensuring that the language used was precise, and the ideas presented were lucid.

Eventually, after several rounds of revisions, my small essay was complete. Reading it now, I can see the glaring errors that I made and how far I have come since then. However, at the time, it was a huge accomplishment for me. I had created a coherent, meaningful piece of writing in English, using the limited vocabulary and grammar that I had at my disposal.

Writing that small essay in grade 7 taught me that learning a new language is a gradual process, and that improving one's fluency in the language requires practice, patience, and perseverance. It also taught me the importance of taking feedback constructively and using it to improve my writing.

In conclusion, my experience writing a small essay in grade 7 was instrumental in helping me develop as a writer and a communicator. It taught me the value of hard work, dedication, and resilience. Looking back, it is clear that, while I still have a long way to go in mastering the English language, I have made significant strides since that time. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to learn and improve, and I am excited to continue on this journey of language learning.
