Celebrating Spring Festival in English: How I Embraced the Festive Spirit

Celebrating Spring Festival in English: How I Embraced the Festive Spirit

When I was younger, I used to think that Spring Festival was reserved exclusively for those who spoke Mandarin Chinese. Despite growing up in a predominantly Chinese-American community, I never truly embraced the cultural significance of this holiday until I started learning Mandarin and English at the same time. As I became more proficient in both languages, my appreciation for Spring Festival deepened, and I began to understand the beauty of this timeless celebration.

My journey towards embracing the festive spirit of Spring Festival began with my study of Mandarin Chinese. I remember learning about the importance of Chinese New Year’s Eve, known as “Chu Xi” in Mandarin. On this night, families celebrate by gathering together to enjoy a decadent feast, usually featuring homemade dishes that are traditional to the holiday. I was fascinated by the complexity of the Chinese New Year’s Eve meal, which often includes dishes that symbolize good luck and prosperity, such as dumplings and fish.

As I continued to study Mandarin, I also learned about the traditions surrounding the Spring Festival season. For example, I discovered that it’s customary to decorate your home with red lanterns and festive banners bearing auspicious phrases such as “good fortune,” “happiness,” and “longevity.” I also learned about the importance of the “Red Envelope,” which is a traditional gift given by adults to children during Spring Festival. The envelope contains a small amount of money, and it is said to bring good luck and prosperity to the children who receive it.

However, it wasn’t until I started learning English that I truly began to understand the cultural significance of Spring Festival. I discovered that, like Christmas for many Westerners, Spring Festival is a time of year when families come together to celebrate their shared history and traditions. It’s a time to eat delicious food, exchange gifts, and spend time with loved ones. I realized that, despite the cultural and linguistic differences between English-speaking countries and Mandarin-speaking countries, the values and traditions underlying Spring Festival are universal.

In many ways, my experience of Spring Festival has been enriched by my dual-language background. As I celebrate the holiday with family and friends, I am able to honor both the Chinese and English-speaking sides of my identity. I can appreciate the intricate symbolism and traditions of the Chinese New Year’s Eve meal, while also reveling in the sense of unity and joy that comes from gathering with loved ones.

Ultimately, celebrating Spring Festival in English has allowed me to connect with a wider community of people who share my love for this special holiday. Whether I’m chatting with friends in Mandarin or wishing English-speaking colleagues a Happy New Year, I am reminded of the ways in which language can help bridge cultural divides and bring people together. By embracing Spring Festival in all its linguistic and cultural complexity, I have been able to deepen my connection to Chinese culture and to the universal human values that underlie this timeless celebration.
