My Memorable University Life: Navigating Challenges and Embracing Opportunities with English
University, a place where you can enjoy your freedom, learn new things, and acquire valuable knowledge for your future career. However, university life could also be arduous and challenging, especially if you are not a native English speaker. In my case, English was not my first language, and I had to endure the struggles and obstacles of communicating, reading and writing in English. Nevertheless, I never let these obstacles demotivate me, instead, I took this challenge to improve my English skills and embraced every opportunity that came my way.
As a non-native English speaker, it was challenging to cope with English lectures and assignments in the beginning. I used to have difficulty understanding what the professor was explaining, and I often felt lost in the class. But I was determined to overcome this obstacle, so I started watching English movies, TV shows, and listened to English podcasts to improve my listening and comprehension skills. Besides, I also sought help from my professors and classmates, who graciously helped me understand the lectures and assignments.
Apart from the academic aspect, I also faced difficulties communicating with local students and professors. Although I could converse in English, I was still not confident in my skills to express myself well. To tackle this problem, I joined various English clubs and activities, such as English Speaking clubs and Debate clubs. I also made friends with local students who helped me improve my communication skills and made me feel included.
The most memorable opportunity in my university life was when I got a chance to participate in an international English writing competition. Initially, I was sceptical about competing, given that I had limited experience in writing in English. However, I decided to participate, thinking that it was a great opportunity to challenge myself and improve my writing skills. I worked hard on the competition and sought help from my professors to hone my essay. In the end, I was thrilled to receive the third prize, which was a real achievement for me.
Overall, my university life was a mixture of challenges and opportunities, and the English language played a significant role in my journey. It was not an easy journey, but I learned new things and developed many skills that I could take with me wherever I go. I am grateful for every opportunity that came my way, and I am proud to say that English has opened many doors for me, professionally and personally.
