Reflecting on My Progress in Writing English Compositions During My Second Year of Junior High School

It's hard to believe that my second year of junior high school has already come to an end. I vividly remember how nervous I was when I wrote my first English composition at the beginning of the school year. However, looking back at my progress in writing English compositions during the past year, I realize how much I have improved and how much I have learned.

One of the challenges I faced was coming up with ideas. In my first year of junior high school, I wrote short essays about my daily life or my hobbies, and I thought that writing was easy. However, in the second year, we were required to write longer and more complex essays, and I struggled to find the right topic that could grab readers' attention. After some trial and error, I learned to keep a list of interesting topics that I could use for future essays. This strategy helped me to always have a few good ideas in mind, which saved me time during the writing process.

The second challenge was organizing my ideas. I found out that it was not enough to just have a good topic, but I needed to have a clear and logical structure to support my ideas. I used to jump from one idea to another without having any clear connections, which made my writing confusing and hard to follow. To improve, I started to create an outline before writing a draft. This allowed me to structure my ideas in a logical order and ensure that every paragraph was related to the thesis statement. With this technique, I became more focused and organized, which made my essays more effective and enjoyable to read.

Another challenge I faced was using appropriate vocabulary and grammar. In my first year, I tended to rely heavily on Google Translate or a dictionary to find words or phrases that I did not know. However, as my teacher pointed out, many of these translations were not accurate, and I needed to rely on my own understanding of English vocabulary and grammar. Therefore, I started to read more English books, newspapers, and articles to expand my vocabulary, and I also tried to think in English whenever possible. Moreover, I learned some grammar rules that I had missed before, such as using articles (a/an/the) correctly in sentences, and how to recognize the different tenses. And as I practiced more, I became more confident in using English correctly and fluently.

Finally, I want to mention my teacher's guidance and feedback. I am grateful to have a teacher who is patient and supportive, and who always provides insightful feedback on my writing. Her comments challenged me to think more critically about my writing and helped me to identify areas that needed improvement. Her advice on using varied sentence structures, descriptive language, and incorporating evidence in my essays significantly improved my writing style.

In conclusion, writing English compositions has been a challenging but rewarding experience for me. Throughout the second year of junior high school, I have learned to generate ideas, organize my thoughts, use appropriate vocabulary and grammar, and get feedback from my teacher. Looking back at my progress, I realize how much I have grown as a writer and how much more confident I feel about writing essays in English. I believe that these skills will continue to serve me well in the future, and I look forward to further improving my writing abilities.
