Let Me Introduce Myself: A Glimpse into My English Journey

I am a sophomore student majoring in English at a prominent university in China. Throughout my academic journey, learning English has always been an integral part of my education. English has not only unlocked numerous opportunities for me, but also helped me broaden my horizons and understand the world in a more comprehensive and profound way.

As a child, my first exposure to English was through cartoons and songs. I would sing along to my favourite Disney songs and watch shows like Sesame Street and Barney in English. Although I could not understand everything, I loved the sound of the language and would often imitate the characters' accents and intonations, which amused my parents and friends.

It wasn't until primary school that I started formal English classes. Although textbooks were tedious, I found solace in the colourful illustrations and the fascinating stories in English storybooks. I would read them for hours on end, often losing myself in the imaginary worlds of the characters. I loved listening to my English teacher's soothing voice as she read aloud and corrected our pronunciations and grammar mistakes. With her guidance, I learned basic vocabulary and grammar rules and started to communicate in English with my classmates and the occasional foreigner.

Middle school marked a significant turning point in my English journey. My school had a competitive English program, and I was admitted into the "Elite English Class" after a rigorous entrance test. The program focused on verbal communication skills, including pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency in speaking. The class involved a lot of role-playing, simulations, debates, and public speaking, which helped me overcome my stage fright and build my confidence. My teacher was a native English speaker, and he would often use English slang, idioms, and phrases in his speech, which made the class more engaging and authentic. I also joined the school's English club, where we would practice listening and speaking skills by watching TED talks, podcasts, and news programmes.

By high school, my English skills had reached a level where I could read and understand English literature and academic papers. I was fascinated by the beauty and richness of English literature and started reading English classics such as Shakespeare, Dickens, and Austen. Reading these books not only improved my English proficiency but also broadened my knowledge of history, culture, and society. My school also offered advanced English courses, including creative writing, academic writing, and English literature. These courses challenged me to express my thoughts and ideas in English, which helped me develop critical thinking and analytical skills.

Now, as a sophomore in university, I continue to improve my English proficiency through various academic and extracurricular activities. My major requires me to read, comprehend, and write academic papers in English, which demands a high level of language proficiency and critical thinking. I also participate in English debate competitions, which require me to research, analyse, and present arguments in English. These competitions have strengthened my English communication skills as well as my ability to think on my feet and adapt to different situations.

In conclusion, my English journey has been a long and rewarding one. Along the way, I have developed a profound appreciation for the language and the culture it embodies. I'm grateful for the opportunities I've had to learn and improve my English, and I'm excited to see where my language skills will take me in the future.
